Major Earthquake in Puerto Rico

Emery Runde, Reporter

A few weeks ago there was a huge earthquake in Puerto Rico. Which has resulted in homes being destroyed, electricity shut-offs, and water shortages. The main contributor to energy on the island, the Costa Sur power plant is out of commission which has slowed down the recovery efforts. There have also been many quakes because of this in Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican Government and the US Government have already taken steps to help with recovery.

On December 28th there was a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Puerto Rico.  One man is dead and many more injured. Since December 28th there have been nearly a dozen major quakes and over a thousand smaller quakes theses are called aftershocks. This has resulted in people fearing to be in or around buildings. Many people are now camping in their backyards, on the street, or anywhere not close to a building. There have been 50 collapsed homes, 100 more threatening to fall, 3 schools destroyed, 300 people homeless, and many more without electricity and water. The Punat Ventana naturally made stone arch (headline photo) was destroyed. This was a huge tourist attraction and a natural wonder. Now it can not be observed by future generations. The Costa Sur power plant suffered severe damages due to the earthquake. Due to this the electrical grid triggered a self-protective measure that resulted in an island-wide blackout. The other electrical power plants and electrical-grid are now working to bring electricity to the island. However, the Costa Sur power plant was the biggest contributor to electricity on the island. The Costa Sur power plant is not in working order and may take a few weeks to fix. Thankfully, almost all of the hospitals have electricity. Also, many charities and fundraisers are bringing food and water to the Puerto Ricans including but not limited to Global Giving and Water Mission.

The governor of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vázquez declared a state of emergency that mobilized the Puerto Rican national guard of over 1,000 men and women. The national guard is now helping with recovery, rebuilding, and to ensure the safety of citizens in places hardest hit by the quakes. President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in Puerto Rico. This has freed up a lot of Federal-aid funds. Puerto Rico is still recovering from Hurricane Maria which hit Puerto Rico in 2017. Hurricane Maria destroyed much of Puerto Rico and also resulted in 2,000 Puerto Ricans killed, 100 billion dollars in damages, and a scandal involving Puerto Rico officials and recovery aid. This scandal saw aid sent by the U.S. government, charities rot in drop zones because Puerto Rican officials were looking to sell it to the highest bidder. The Puerto Ricans recovered slowly because of this. But they were able to get back on their feet.

In the end, many homes are destroyed and one man dead. The Punta Ventana tourist attraction is now destroyed for good. Even so, the Puerto Rican people were able to recover from Hurricane Maria they will be able to recover from this. The Costa Sur electrical plant will soon be up in running. Many charities are helping to feed, rebuild, and help in any way they can in Puerto Rico. Money has been freed up because of Trump declaring a State of Emergency in Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican governor has allowed the Coast Gaurd to also help with clean up, rebuilding, and the safety of its citizens. These disasters are not new to the Puerto Ricans and they will regain their former glory.
