Illuminae is a sci-fi book.  It isn’t your normal novel. It has more in common with a graphic novel.  I would say it lies some place in between the two genres. The story takes place in space.  There is plenty of future tech and it is very intriguing. There is a government type power but corporations have a lot of power as well.  The story focuses on two main character, Kady and Ezra.

In a normal morning Kady wakes up and gets ready to break up with her boyfriend Ezra.  She didn’t expect that her planet was going to be invaded. The year is 2575 and two mega corporations are fighting over a planet.  The planet contains an illegal mining operation. Kady and Ezra manage to evacuate the planet. However, a hostile warship is in hot pursuit.  There trouble doesn’t stop there. A plague has broken out and is changing people, the fleets AI could be malfunctioning. The higher ups seem adamant on keeping the important information from the civilians so Kady takes it upon herself to figure out what is going on.  She discovers that the only person who can help her is Ezra her ex-boyfriend who she swore she would never talk to again.

The entire story is told through a dossier of hacked documents- including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more.  Illuminae is the first book in a trilogy. It ends with you wanting so much more and the next two books will definitely deliver. The authors do a wonderful job of showing the vulnerabilities and strengths of every character.  Characters are put into impossible positions and make those impossible choices. All in all, this is a fun read and you will never be bored reading it.
